Dr. Joni Schwartz-Chaney is Professor of Humanities at the City University of New York – LaGuardia Community College and adjunct professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice Graduate Studies Program. She is a critical researcher, social activist scholar with a focus on engagement of Black male students in STEM as well as race and re-entry from prison, and race and communication.  She is the co-author Gifts from the Dark: Learning from the Incarceration Experience; and Race, Education and Re-engaging Formerly Incarcerated Citizens: Counterstories & Counterspaces both published by Rowman & Littlefield as well as twenty-four scholarly articles, and two documentaries. Her book chapter, All Things Being Equal (Not): The Emotional Components of Equity in STEM Education will be published in the volume Unveiling the Cloak of Invisibility:  Why Black males are absent in STEM Disciplines through Information Age Publishing under Dr. Chance W. Lewis’ series, Contemporary Perspectives on Access, Equity, and Achievement in 2023. Her new book Critical Faith: Critical Race & the Church will be published by Fortress Press this year as well

Currently teaching – Spring, 2025 – Non-Verbal Communication & Public Speaking as well as Co-PI for the ACT Project – Accelerated College Transition Program at Queensborough Correctional Facility supported by the Second Chance Grant from the Department of Justice.
